Alternative energy and environmental industries
Bahrain was the first country in the Gulf to find oil and the first to diversify its economy.
Now we aim to lead the region in environmental industries and alternative energy.
Environmental concerns, coupled with booming domestic demand for power, have led all the Gulf states to explore alternative energy sources.
There is a desire to decrease the use of oil and gas in power generation, to preserve hydrocarbon reserves, and to look instead for long-term sustainable solutions.
Renewable energy projectsRegionally, billions are being invested in renewable energy projects such as wind farms, clean-burning coal-fired power stations, and hydrogen-fired power plants.
Bahrain and its neighbours naturally enjoy a uniquely good location for solar power. Bahrain, for example, gets an average of over 9 hours a day of sunshine, and it is estimated that each square metre of land is capable of generating over 2,000 kilowatt hours of energy a year.
We are also exploring our other great natural resource, the sea. Tidal power has great potential, especially in Bahrain.
