Venture Capital event aims to drive innovation

At least 200 investors in ICT (Information & Communication Technology) are due to attend an exclusive conference on 6 December in Manama.

PreMoney Middle East & North Africa, organised by Silicon Valley-based 500 Startups, in partnership with Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) and Microsoft, will give investors greater insight into venture capital in ICT. By focusing on innovation and ‘disruption’ in the sector, it will cover new funding platforms, technologies and strategies to enable investors to build successful, varied portfolios.

Heavyweight speakers

The conference features some of the world’s most forward-thinking investors, and includes talks by prominent industry figures from Silicon Valley and the Middle East, such as Intel Capital, Falt6Labs, twofour54, Seedcamp, STC Ventures and Commerce Ventures. Mr. Khalid Al Rumaihi, Chief Executive of the EDB, will also outline how the agency assists first-time investors.

Bahrain – a natural venue

500 Startups selected Bahrain due to a combination of the Kingdom’s status as a regional technology hub and its entrepreneurial local workforce.

More than 30 IT service providers operate in Bahrain, including international technology giants Huawei, Microsoft and Wipro. All benefit from an ICT sector that is the most liberalised in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) and established as a testing-ground for innovators wanting to roll out new technology across the region.

Not only does skilled, local talent make up 70% of Bahrain’s ICT workforce; young Bahrainis are highly driven. In a 2014 Jeddah Economic Forum report, no fewer than 70% said they wanted to start their own business.

In addition, Bahrain provides an open business environment that fully supports innovation. Our SME (small-to-medium enterprise) model is endorsed by UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and followed by 40 countries. With funding opportunities available through local organisations like Tamkeen, Bahrain Development Bank and Tenmou, aspiring entrepreneurs have everything they need to take advantage of new technology.
